Surface Tension

Darren Hopes

Though their footprints pad the same surface their minds inhabit a myriad of layers, some of which are shared. Layers formed or revealed by individually accumulated days off planet, layers formed by days spent in common on its surface.
In the distance, the dome reflects the blue light from Golgotha Sestri’s cold star, strong enough only to cause pale wisps of cloud to rise from the surface ice.
“Overwind” says Igor, “Nobody’s gonta like hearing about it.”
“Fuckem, they didn’t want to listen to the warnings” says Myla as she sets the test gear down next to the winch and withdraws the cutters from the quiver on her arm.
Igor fires up the power supply unit and gives her the thumb.
The light flashes off their darkened faceplates as Myla begins the first cut; there is no need for further vocalisation, this work is carried out within the common layers.
