'38 Rue Utopia ~ Ep.46

Where in the hell can you go
Far from the things that you know
Far from the sprawl of concrete that keeps Crawling its way
about 1, 000 miles a day?
~ Natalie Merchant ‘Motherland’ 2001

The Parting of Ulysses ~ John Everett

During the early days of the collapse, when things where in turmoil, those with the most to lose, those who capitalism had fed and allowed to gain a certain expectation of continuity, of safety, of predictability, reacted in the predictable manner of the herd.
Like moved closer to like, polarised and protecting what they had already claimed as theirs.
Refugee experience has borne out that life is short, unsafe and unpredictable and that separation from the herd is likely to lower your life-expectancy if not your expectation of a better life-quality in your hoped-for destination.
Alice catches up to her at the gate.
“We need you here Eva”
“I know, but I gotta go”
“Why?”
“I dunno, I just don’t wanna die here”
“Where else is there? Bigmark is shit, you’ll end up somebody’s slave”
“I’m not going to Bigmark”
“Metal”
Eva doesn’t respond, Alice looks back at the commons before reaching into the pocket of her jacket and handing over a package wrapped in printer offcut.
“?”
“The old man’s teeth; I thought they’d give you bargaining power in Bigmark, but I guess they’ll probably be just as useful in Metal”
