'38 Rue Utopia ~ Ep.47

We came to the earth to graze
~ Live ‘Graze’ 1997

Noriyoshi Ohrai

To their left, beyond the electric fence that makes Daniel’s clave version look like elastic bands strung between ice-cream sticks; beyond the interior wall of bristling weaponry; the refinery flares off against the roiling underside of the cloud base. Their journey has taken the refinery from being dead ahead to being on their left, with Bigmark now visible ahead, all lit up and nowhere else to go.
The going is still wet but markedly easier here on the slab. Daniel stops to take a drink from his bottle, the flare competes with the backlight on the reflective surface of his left eye as he checks his perimeter, an act that comes easy even though he’s not used the routines for years; old habits die hard for those who’ve had to learn their lessons harder.
Alec hunkers down and chews on his lower lip; wonders if they’ll get a chance to get some real food somewhere in the process of making the world right again. The potato soup that they’d procured at Herb’s Cafe hadn’t really raised the standards. He imagines a hot meal containing meat, vegetables; anything but potatoes. He sighs, knowing better than to vocalise this daydream in Daniel’s presence.
