A View of the Roman Campagna with Travelers Passing ~ Edward Lear |
On occasions when travellers are by circumstance forced to pass within close proximity of one another, there is no actual protocol to fall back on; all social niceties having long been smashed on the anvil of global catastrophe. The Victorian practise of hat-doffing or the cheerful ‘good day’ are long gone; lost by the turn of the century; lost to a world where the powers-that-be no longer hid the fact that they could do whatever they wanted and nobody was gonna stop them.
Weapons protocol dictates that a weapon drawn is a provocation, therefore, since one traveller has no idea what the other is carrying, nuances of twitch, bluff and bravado, reminiscent of hackneyed cowboy showdowns, are inevitably played out.
Some miles from the cloverleaf and Herb’s Café, a man approaches from the east. Eva opts for the ‘make no eye contact’ option, draws the zip-gun into her hand beneath the cape, keeps her hood up and tries to walk like a man.
