'38 Rue Utopia ~ Ep.53

Janey's going back to Walker
Says folks there are happy bees
~ Tom Verlaine ‘A Town Called Walker’ 1987

Before The Divorce ~ Honoré Desmond Sharrer

Ghosts.
Ghosts.
Ghosts.
The kids are subdued in the cloud of adult tension.
Whispers from the kitchen alcove where Gemma and Delores, shadows against the burnt white wall above the ranges, help Kay with the preparations for their evening meal.
Judy, the eldest by 3 months, murmurs words of comfort to little Mikey who, although not the youngest, is still a baby.
“It’ll be okay Mikey, you’ll see, when Ellie & Daniel come back things’ll be normal again”
The others snuggle round, a blanket of wide eyes in the drafty gloom of the commons.
No word from Daniel and Alec.
No word from Ellie.
Marty’s body’s in a sack, stored in the warehouse, they’ll bury him tomorrow.
Alice has already made his nametag.
Lee sprawls on the settee he fabbed years ago from the scraps and offcuts of old synthetics found in the building when they’d moved in. It’s been a while since he’s had it all to himself.
He can feel the weight of it all focussed on his shoulders.
“Did anybody check the fence yet?”
Alice finds herself choking back on the sob that has already escaped from her chest. The analytical ghost in her watches from afar, observes the room’s red and brown cocoon of warm light, and wonders how the mere presence of her darkest fears, of loss, of loneliness, of death, can take her back to being an infant.
“Alice?”
