The Maze, She Breathes Jaime Zollars

Eva’s not particularly confident that she’s made the right decision by bailing out of the clave. It’s fucken bleak up here on the plateau. Windy; no trees; just bushes; bits of heather and gorse and fields of lumpy moss. Bleak but with its own particular brand of beautiful to soften the blow.
Beautiful in a crafted sense; since it is widely known that those fields are minefields; the rule being: no walking there, stick to the paths.
Since Metal sits at the centre of the plateau, slightly elevated, and since Metal’s not letting anybody in who’s not been well vetted, the minefields and paths have been farmed and formed into a maze with multiple starting points around the perimeter and only one entrance into the city.
It’s rumoured on the wires that people die in the maze; lost to the depth that they must choose between dying of hunger/exposure and the chance that they won’t stand on a mine if they were to cross that short gap to the path that is closer to the exit or entrance.
Seen from above, should your drone still manage to survive long enough to send back images from this data dead-zone; seen from above the plateau, with Metal at its centre surrounded by the maze, it would perhaps look like a spider, or a potato with roots in all directions, or a computer chip.
Once you pass through that singular entrance, should you make it that far, Metal presents the Outer Circle, unsurprisingly, another maze. A circumference of buildings long deserted leaving an urban no-mans-land populated with lots of weapons and not much in the way of talk.
Metal’s people are more than willing to perform guard duty in the Outer Circle since

  • It’s a requirement for the maintenance of a life that chooses to be unfettered by the corporate yet remains rooted deep in the corporeal.
  • it’s a blast when you can see the act from the stage, and
  • it’s a boredom-buster that doesn’t happen too frequently these days, tourism being way down since ’38

These days the odds are stacked against anyone being bothered to go to Metal. For what? To be shot by some fuckwit on a bar fight? To die in the maze?
Fuck that.
Eva’s not particularly confident that she’s made the right decision by bailing out of the clave but she does know that this is where she’s from and from listening to Ellie she’s been granted an idea of what it’s really like once you get inside proper.
While the map file embedded in her hardware when she was born will guide her through the outer maze unscathed, she knows that her lack of knowledge means that, once inside the gate, she’s gonna have to play it by ear.
