They eat their ration packs in silence, each of the five faces lit from the lamp they encircle; each engrossed in the sensation of new, or long forgotten flavours; each an island in the pleasure-primal river of minutes spent refuelling their bodies.
Alec finishes first and gazes into the lamp for some seconds before feigning the casual suggestion:
“Okay so, seeing as we’re here, why don’t we go see Peye? See if she’s seen Ellie.”
Daniel continues chewing.
Stops.
Looks at Alec; in the eye for the first time since Joe.
Breaks eye contact.
“Yeah, why not”
“Okay guys” Alec looks at his boys, “You wanted adventure”
