Purge Code

Aaron Griffin

All heads turn at his entrance, taking in the black hood; the chromium hands. All heads quickly retract scrutiny as their perimeters are peppered with clove ice.
Murmuring resumes, but with a greater tone of awe; his presence confirming years of rumour; until now unsubstantiated.
The Coordinator’s Avatar rises to the rostrum, twirls his moustache and clears his throat before announcing the operation online.
“Check your uploads for detailed grid positions and be prepared to transcend within the next hour, which should give you all enough time to integrate the game plan. Payment will be made in the usual manner upon completion. That is all.”
The Coordinator de-mats his Avatar in a cloud of decorative pixel dust and the room is returned to the throng.
It’s only after that hour has passed and all operatives have taken position within the grid that it becomes clear that this is no mission.
The figure at the centre throws back his black hood with chromium fingers catching the light from the simulation lasers and each operative is afforded a glimpse of a face before being presented with the Purge Code which reduces each of them to a flashing green cursor at the beginning of an empty command line.
